Psychological disorders and physical illness Essay Example for Free

Psychological disorders and physical illness Essay Irrational fear of common things leads to their inability to cope with life because the things that they fear have to be faced everyday. The most common disorders include phobias, In the medical field, many factors are attributed to the various conditions that people experience. Although genetic and biological factors which constitute of the natural causes and the life experiences which are the nurture factors contribute to ones physical wellbeing, it is also possible that a majority of illnesses that people suffer from are brought about by psychological factors. Heart diseases, chronic headaches, insomnia, hypertension, ulcers, eating disorders among others are some of the diseases that can be caused by psychological factors (Stoudemire A. 1995). It has been established that when one’s stress levels are very high, it reduces the activity of the lymphocytes leading to an increased likelihood of illness (Sadock B J. , Kaplan H. I. Sadock V. A. ). A person suffering from a psychological disorder will most likely have feelings of helplessness in any given situation causing them to suffer even from common illnesses more than others will. To aid the patients suffering from these disorders, one can only recommend relaxation techniques while providing anti-depressants to control their response to life’s normal occurrences. A person with a disorder tends to react in a more intense manner than other would in similar situations. This causes an imbalance in their bodily functions leading to their contracting illnesses that would have otherwise been avoided. It also affects their chances of getting better from any other illness that they may be suffering from. The disorders include anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders and panic (Ketterer M. W. , Mahr G`. Goldberg A. D. ). These render a person powerless against their fears and in the process affect their wellbeing.

The Development of Ancient Medicine & Influences Essay -- essays resea

Many different cultures have tried different methods as to find out about the causes of disease and how to treat different kinds of diseases. Various countries have come up with alternate cures and treatments for various diseases. These ancient societies compromise of China, Greece, Egypt and South America. They practiced a wide range of cures for their patients, and they specialize in different fields. For example, meditation and acupuncture were practices in China. Dissection, operations and drug therapy were also performed. But how did theses societies – who did not have as much technology as today – found out about the different illnesses and their cures? The western medicines usually compromise the use of folk remedies and prayers. They now believed that sickness was not a result of punishments sent from gods, but something ‘natural’. Dissection was performed and thus, they knew more about the internal organs of animals – although they were not allowed to dissect humans yet. Plants were also used as medicines. These were known as herbal medicines. In the eastern countries, there seem to be more on religious treatments, and healing the entire body – not just the deformed part. They believed that the whole body is to be treated to maintain a healthy body and prevent disease. Various kinds of treatments were discovered throughout the ancient societies. These cures includes trepanning, surgery, herbal medicines, religious or agricultural remedies, and sacrifices. These were the forms of treatments undertaken by the patients. One interesting fact includes the operated remains, especially the trepanning of the skull. A number of these patients survived the treatment, as some of the wounds have signs of healing. Therefore, they... ...se include the use of a doctor’s observance to decide whether a person needs treatment or not. Another type of cure that has survived to today, are surgery and herbal medicines. Operations are an important part in medicine to keep on healthy. When cures are needed, the body is sometimes operated to take out the diseased part. Herbal medicines – especially Chinese medicine – are still available for use in the modern world. Although most of the world now relies on western medicine, some diseases may not be effective with western medicine, but works with Chinese medicine. Overall, medicine is always changing, but the useful areas of medicine never stop. The development of medicine will continue to improve, hoping that the best and effective medicines are delivered to patients. However, many medicines still follow the ancient ideas, and some treatments even go on.

Culture And Society Essay

Languages are sources out from the historical background of each country. The stresses and the tenses of each language actually differ from each other primarily because of the fact that different nationalities around the world have different perceptions with regards life and living. It could be observed that such linguistic assessments had been based upon their realization of how life’s elements should be perceived. Taking the sound of the nature and the environment in use through language had been the main feature of such languages as they are profoundly used around the world. 2. Using the concepts of ethnocentrism and cultural relativism, discuss the impact that a bilingual education might have on understanding other cultures. Having a bilingual education opens an individual to understanding how other nations actually understand nature and how much they give importance to the elements making it up. Likely, the process is more complex than actually expected. With one’s ability of identifying one language from the other, he is also able to identify one culture from another as he tries to evaluate the different elements of language that each culture recognizes through speech. Through this, the person having a bilingual capability shall have a better mirror of the world through spoken tongue. 3. How might ethnocentrism, xenocentrism and temporocentrism affect people’s attitudes toward bilingual education programs? It depends on one’s view of cultural connection in the world that the possibility of learning another language lays. Likely, the idea is to help a person understand different cultures through the existence of different languages. Most often than not, one’s disposition about the said idea of cultural connection actually increases or decreases the capability of one to accept learning other languages from other nationalities, moreover, such disposition would give them either a better or dimmer chance of accepting other nationalities as part of the one whole wide world community of humans trying to cope up with the changes of the world. 4. Describe what is meant by value conflict. Give examples. How are such conflicts resolved? Value conflict usually occurs when a person’s ideas of something or someone does not connect with that of the others. Likely, in terms of language, such situation occurs when one does not understand a language based on the perception of others. If one foreigner does not understand the way English should be understood, comprehension of the conversation becomes impossible. 5. Discuss ways in which existing student norms may not be beneficial or may even be harmful to themselves. Student norms may not be beneficial to students themselves when the said norms actually disregard the cultural values of each individual. As noted earlier, the recognition of such social and personal element in satisfaction is a certain factor that needs to be given attention through careful understanding of the matter. Most likely, such values are related to the cultural perceptions of each student towards their regular activities in school. ** step 2 ** A. List and discuss at least one idea from this chapter 4 such as: Technology and Material Culture (meaning what can we in our social world understand from this) Technology is one particular element in the current human culture that connects every nationality together in the present system of things. The material culture that it opens up to the current human generation actually increases the capability of the people to relate to each other even beyond understanding the cultures and values of each nationality through the existence of language. Likely, the idea is that technology becomes an undeniably fine link between people around the world today especially because of the advancement that it implies on every group of people regardless of their culture and values as members of the human society. ** step 3 ** B. Explain an important concept from chapter 4 and explain why it is significant? ( meaning why are the elements of culture significant) Elements of culture are significant in explaining the differences of people in the different areas of the world. Understandably, such elements make a certain implication on how and who a certain group of people are depending on their perceptions of life, their language and their historical background as well. Likely, such elements of culture are used to identify people regarding their lifestyle and how they are actually able to contribute to the development of the society at present.

The Importance of Cleanliness and Tidiness of a Classroom

It is important to keep and maintain clean environment in our classroom at any time. If we don’t then we will need to face number of possible problems. First of all, the purposes of keeping clean and tidy include health, beauty absence of disgusting smells and to avoid the spread of dirt from one to another. In the classroom where nearly forty students learning and sitting together in such small area, the environment will need to be clean enough. It is because the air inside is breathing continuously by all of us and the bacteria and virus in the rubbish like tissues used by classmates, packing of the food will stay in the air if we just put rubbish everywhere inside the classroom. Smell of the food would further attract pests which have potential danger giving us health problems as pests are usually dirty. Therefore it is necessary for us to put the rubbish or any other used materials inside the dust bin. In addition, we will use the air-conditioner more frequently in the comi ng months because of the raising temperature. Thus, windows will be closed during most of the time. The circulation of air may not be as good as before. If we still keep on throwing rubbish on the floor, we will have a higher chance to get sick because of breathing in the air which contains bacteria. Besides the negative impact on our health, having a fifty classroom will give others a bad impression on us. Others will just think it is impossible and unreasonable for a secondary four student accept to have such dirty and uncomfortable learning environment. And in my opinion, it is unacceptable for us to have lessons in such environment. Last but certainly not the least; it is also our own responsibility to keep the place around us neat and clean. As we are already a form four student, therefore we should able to self-discipline ourselves at any time not to throw or keep rubbish on the floor without our attention. There is with a doubt for us keeping our surroundings without rubbish or any other used materials. And I don’t think we will accept this if it happens at our home, so why we can accept such kind of things happening in the classroom? The only problem is that we don’t care about it and just ignore it although we know that it will worsen the environment and bring negative impact to us. Lastly, let’s imagine a learning environment which is neat and tidy, will it be comfortable and peace? There is again no doubt to say yes, both the teachers and students will feel good and excellent teaching and studying in a clean classroom. In summary, it is always good and necessary to maintain cleanliness and tidiness around us and our surroundings. It will not merely prevent you from so many diseases and illnesses but also keep the environment in a hygienic condition.

Probability of a Large Straight in Yahtzee in One Roll

Probability of a Large Straight in Yahtzee in One Roll Yahtzee is a dice game that uses five standard six-sided dice. On each turn, players are given three rolls to obtain several different objectives. After each roll, a player may decide which of the dice (if any) are to be retained and which are to be rerolled. The objectives include a variety of different kinds of combinations, many of which are taken from poker. Every different kind of combination is worth a different amount of points. Two of the types of combinations that players must roll are called straights: a small straight and a large straight. Like poker straights, these combinations consist of sequential dice. Small straights employ four of the five dice and large straights use all five dice. Due to the randomness of the rolling of dice, probability can be used to analyze how likely it is to roll a large straight in a single roll. Assumptions We assume that the dice used are fair and independent of one another. Thus there is a uniform sample space consisting of all possible rolls of the five dice. Although Yahtzee allows three rolls, for simplicity we will only consider the case that we obtain a large straight in a single roll. Sample Space Since we are working with a uniform sample space, the calculation of our probability becomes a calculation of a couple of counting problems. The probability of a straight is the number of ways to roll a straight, divided by the number of outcomes in the sample space. It is very easy to count the number of outcomes in the sample space. We are rolling five dice and each of these dice can have one of six different outcomes. A basic application of the multiplication principle tells us that the sample space has 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 65 7776 outcomes. This number will be the denominator of all of the fractions that we use for our probabilities. Number of Straights Next, we need to know how many ways there are to roll a large straight. This is more difficult than calculating the size of the sample space. The reason why this is harder is because there is more subtlety in how we count. A large straight is harder to roll than a small straight, but it is easier to count the number of ways of rolling a large straight than the number of ways of rolling a small straight. This type of straight consists of five sequential numbers. Since there are only six different numbers on the dice, there are only two possible large straights: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and {2, 3, 4, 5, 6}. Now we determine the different number of ways to roll a particular set of dice that give us a straight. For a large straight with the dice {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} we can have the dice in any order. So the following are different ways of rolling the same straight: 1, 2, 3, 4, 55, 4, 3, 2, 11, 3, 5, 2, 4 It would be tedious to list all of the possible ways to get a 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Since we only need to know how many ways there are to do this, we can use some basic counting techniques. We note that all that we are doing is permuting the five dice. There are 5! 120 ways of doing this. Since there are two combinations of dice to make a large straight and 120 ways to roll each of these, there are 2 x 120 240 ways to roll a large straight. Probability Now the probability of rolling a large straight is a simple division calculation. Since there are 240 ways to roll a large straight in a single roll and there are 7776 rolls of five dice possible, the probability of rolling a large straight is 240/7776, which is close to 1/32 and 3.1%. Of course, it is more likely than not that the first roll is not a straight. If this is the case, then we are allowed two more rolls making a straight much more likely. The probability of this is much more complicated to determine because of all of the possible situations that would need to be considered.

Housing the homeless in willow county Essay Example

Housing the homeless in willow county Essay Example Housing the homeless in willow county Essay Housing the homeless in willow county Essay 1.) The Major Participants in the Willow County Case are: The Helping Hand Foundation, Priority Care Fund, Willow County Administration, and the Human Service Department. These groups or bodies are out for the good of the people of Willow County in terms of providing shelter for the homeless or people at the risk of being homeless. But the Values held by these participants are in conflict due to their different assumptions. The County staff assumed that the meeting called was for role clarification and understanding among other agencies, while the other two participants(the city and Helping Hand) thought   the role clarification had been discussed in the meeting with Good fellow and the Mayor which was prior to this meeting they were having with the County Staff. They felt that the meeting they were having was for the program implementation. 2.)   Considering the issues before the Administrator, Gardner, and the major constraint of the County –which is the inability to fund all the projects alone, Gardner may have to source for other means of bringing to reality the plan, by seeking the assistance of the government; since he has to satisfy the other agencies involved and the county board. 3. The administrative staff members that should be involved are: Craig Beckwith , director   of policy Analysis Division, Molly Parsons, the Head of Helping Hand Foundation, the City , Janet Hamilton, the Director of Human Services. 4.  Ã‚   Factors to be considered in the development of the recommendation include: The County Policy, the conclusion reached at the meeting Gardner would involve the majority of opinion expressed at the Public hearing. Goodfellow’s preference for Option 1b, also one of the commissioner’s concern about the inability to fully fund both projects, the expectations of the City and the ultimatum of the Helping Hand Foundation. 5. THE COMMUNICATIONS DILEMMA Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

THE COMMUNICATIONS DILEMMA - Case Study Example It involves an effective system in which employees can get the information they need (Smith & Mounter, 2008). Communication is an adhesive force that should hold an organization together. Without communication, an organization would be just a collection of disconnected employees working in different directions. Miami Memorial Hospital has a huge problem due to internal communication problems. The new head of the hospital has created many enemies among the employees. As much as even his supporters agree that he came into the hospital during tough times, everyone agrees that he has a communication problem. During his first six months, Dr, Smith has made various changes to which most of the employees disagree. Examples include retrenchment of 50 employees and demoting two long term care workers. He also fired the manager in charge of education and training and a popular leader who had been in the hospital for eighteen years. The rankings of employees sows that a majority of them are ver y dissatisfied and have no motivation. They feel that Dr. Smith does not recognize them, are afraid of questioning Dr. Smith’s decisions and use of resources. This paper will analyze the case and recommend an effective solution to the communication process at Miami Memorial Hospital. ... According to Wright (2009) the decision making process in any organization determines the manner in which employees respond to decision outcomes. The manner in which the management communicates concerning decision made is crucial for any organization. In Miami Memorial Hospital, I will question the management decision making process in order to establish its impact on the organization. I feel that the fact that employees have come to dislike all the actions of Dr. Smith, this says something about the exclusion of employees from the decision making process. The case also says something about the communication methods of Dr. Smith. His poor communication methods or lack of communication methods have led to a poor relationship between him and his employees (Wright, 2009). In addition to working from the information provided, I will conduct my own research and determine the truth in my speculations. Specifically, I will research into the decision making process, and the degree of employe e involvement. I will also seek to determine the method of communication used by Dr. Smith. These two issues arise from the fact that a majority of employees have a grudge against Dr. Smith because of his actions. Armed with such information, I will have a clear situation from which I can determine the best course of action. Gathering Information from Employees The information provided by employees will be the best source of information for my research into the problem. This is because internal communication involves flow of information between employees and the management of an organization. The effectiveness or lack of a good communication system impacts directly on employees. In gathering the information, I will use interviews and questionnaires. This will ensure that I pose specific

Dear Abby Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Dear Abby - Research Paper Example They are exposed to and benefit from computer literacy in schools, some students attend school exclusively online, and then, of course, there are the games, chat rooms, and other social media, like Facebook. However, there is one thing that a very dangerous, hurtful, and serious threats to the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of adolescents and teenagers every single day for some children who visit the internet; this occurrence is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a cruel child of our modern technological age. There are a number of actions that qualify as fitting under the umbrella of cyberbullying, including: 1. Sending unkind or threatening messages through emails or messaging boards. 2. Intentionally spreading untrue rumors onto the internet or text messages. 3. Posting inappropriate, offensive, or insulting photographs of a person onto a site with the sole purpose than to criticize them. 4. Taking another’s internet information and use it to invade the accounts in order to be unkind or may pretend to be someone else that you already know. 5. Participating in the â€Å"forwarding† of such messages is perpetuating the problem (Hatch, 2011). It is, essentially, the same type of degradation, insults, humiliations, and intended embarrassments that children experience in the physical world accept adapted to attacks via the internet. Fortunately there are practical and applicable answers for those concerns. There are a long list of pros and cons related to children, teenagers, and the internet. It can improve classroom learning, helps children keep up with the changing technology, can increase visual reasoning, and can, in some case, widen ones social circle. However, there are also, all of the negative, or, potentially, negative aspects, like loss of privacy, sedentary lifestyle, and the potential for cyberbullying ( Hatch, 2011). Individual people react differently than the next. For some children, the internet becomes their solace from the stressors in their lives, and is beneficial. The trick in this case is moderation. Like with anything there is such a thing as â€Å"too much of a good thing.† When the time spent on the internet begins to supersede the living of their life, which causes them to shy away from all things that are not involving the computer, then there be an issue or problem that needs addressing. It is the responsibility of parents to understand the difference and take the time to be involved in the things your teens, and, especially, adolescents and pre-teens are doing when online. One such proposed negative effect is that excessive internet time, in fact, causes loneliness or depression. This is a rather broad statement. There are so many different factors that contribute to feelings of loneliness and in the case of depression, hereditary and genetic predisposition elements that have absolutely nothing to do with computer usage (Dean , 2010). There is, also, theories that too much internet can cause users to become addicted. Again, like with depression, there are so many factors to consider, like psychological predispositions and hereditary elements, that would contribute it solely to their computer use is a rather impractical argument (Siegel-Itzkovich, 2011). Therefore, for the most part, computers cannot be blamed directly, especially with limited data to support such theories. Cyberbullying is something that is happening every day, in every school, and in every state in the

The Development of Christology and Its Relevance for Contemporary Essay

The Development of Christology and Its Relevance for Contemporary Christianity - Essay Example It is through this interrogation that Christological doctrine developed. This paper examines the development of Christology up to Chalcedon and its importance to the modern Christianity. Christology is a branch of Christian theology concerned with the study of Jesus Christ (Meier 2001, 51). The discipline examines the nature, identity and personality of Jesus Christ in relation to the Christianity faith. Christianity has been in existence for about 2000 years. According to Stephen (2008, 70), the belief that Jesus Christ is man, God, and the Son of God are the foundations of the faith. The Holy Bible asserts that Jesus Christ is the savior whom all Christians should worship. However, the emergence of different and unconventional Christian doctrines in the recent past about Jesus Christ has presented a significant challenge to the mainstream Christian teachings. The earliest interrogation of the personality and identity of Jesus Christ dates back to AD 90-140 (O’ Collins 1995, 107). During this time, Christian spiritual leaders indentified and emphasized on both the divinity and humanity of Jesus. Some of the earliest teachings by established apostolic fathers at the time such as Clement and Ignatius addressed and considered the dual nature of Christ as both divine and human at the same time (Philip, 1893: 52). According to Philip (1893: 59), Ignatius approved the dual nature of Jesus by referring Him as â€Å"Jesus Christ our Lord†. Similarly, Philip (1893, 83) notes that Clement challenged early Christians to consider â€Å"Christ as both God and the adjudicator of both the dead and the living.† The emphasis of both the deity and humanity of Christ in early church are demonstrated by Melito of Sardis (AD 165-175). According to Berkhof (1969, 19), Melito categorically stated Christ was both man and God. He argued that Jesus’ burial after crucifixion demonstrates He is man while his resurrection three days later showed He is God. Howe ver, other apostolic teachers such as Justin Martyr, though acknowledging Jesus as both man and God believed that Christ was lesser than the highest God (Bauckham 1991, 86). Although early teachings acknowledged both the humanity and divinity of Christ, the interrogation was largely superficial and lacked clarity and adequate conviction from early theological critics. Docetism and adoptionism are some of the earliest theological ideologies that questioned both the humanity and divinity nature of Jesus Christ. Adoptionism rejected the divinity of Christ and some theological critics argued that He was not born by a virgin woman (Dunn 2003, 63). According to Ferguson and Wright (1988, 58), adoptionism acknowledged that Jesus was man, who was adopted by God to fulfill a particular or specific role. Hence, the ideology attested that Jesus became the savior only by his strict adherence of God’s commands and his good deeds toward humanity. In the process, Jesus became aware of his d ivine character that was confirmed when he received the Holy Spirit at his baptism (Davidson 2001) Docetism on the other hand affirmed that Jesus was not human at all but divine (Bray 1983, 44). According to Bray (1983, 49), Docetists argued that Jesus did not have physical body, but he just appeared to have flesh and blood. Some of the proponents of Docetism in the 2nd century included Gnosticism but Ignatius, an early apostolic leader vehemently denied that Jesus Christ was not human as proclaimed by

Research proposal (English by Arabic Foreign Language learners) Essay

Research proposal (English by Arabic Foreign Language learners) - Essay Example The subsequent data will be computed for average mean, percentile, ranking and weighted mean. Most people say Arabic compliments are not mere accolades, but, they are relative to the cultural principles inculcated among the people similar to other cultures, which are words of gratitude for any virtuous deed. Conventionally, compliments have become a common part of human verbal communication in the various societies of people in the Universe. Nearly all investigatory studies about human languages where compliments fit in are limited to grassroots viewpoints on how they gained the skills of verbal communication. This was supposed by Larisa and Furuoka in 2007 when they mentioned authors of similar studies like Truitt in 1995, Park in 1995, Kuntz in 1999, Kunt in 1997, Peacock in 1998, Sakui & Gaies in 1999, Kimura et al in 2001, Siebert in 2003 and Bernat in 2006. Apparently, this may carry a lighter weight when used as a proof for the value of languages. This is because authenticities are often based on recorded truth and not on mere viewpoints. This study was concerned mainly with making compliments successful in English by Arabic Foreign Language learners, to avoid circumstances of misunderstanding by the native English speakers or misund

Ecotourism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Ecotourism - Essay Example uld be considered as culturally significant for the local people, it becomes necessary to take care that tourism does not in any way hurt the well being of such communities. Infact one way of improving the well being of the local communities would be to provide them with direct financial benefits to help them conserve the environment or purchasing goods and services directly from them and empowering them. As can be seen from the above discussion, the main difference, as Beeton (1998) points out, between other types of tourism and eco-tourism is that eco-tourism is more involved in conserving the ecological aspect of the environment; there is greater attention given to the ethical aspect of preserving the environment and improving the well being of the local communities involved. Ecotourism activities can include a whole range of activities from photography, wild life viewing, bird watching, mountaineering and even skiing. These activities can come under different categories of touris m but they become ecotourism activities solely when people become aware of the ethical responsibility they have in preserving and conserving the environment. It is therefore not hard to imagine why ecotourism is given precedence in the study of sociology. Sociology, put simply, is the study of the society. It provides deep insight about the social behavior and activities of humans within a society. Buckley (2004), states that the study of social norms is an inherent part of the discipline of sociology and social norms especially pertinent to outdoor creation, have drawn considerable attention in the past few years. Therefore, ecotourism in sociological terms simply seeks to define social norms which are used in evaluating outdoor behavior and environmental conditions. The growth of... Ecotourism Encouraging ecotourism in developing countries would firstly and fore mostly help the economy diversify. As a result of promoting ecotourism, more businesses will spring up and further business expansion in different fields would help spread the risk over a range of diverse economic activities. This is most important relevant to those developing countries who are highly dependent on a single sector in their economy (oil production or agricultural production). The diversification will also help bring in monetary benefits for the local economy. By bringing people into the area, new money will be injected into the economy. The most important strategy for a sustained ecotourism approach is to increase the participation and involvement of the local people. The whole essence of ecotourism lies in its ability to improve the well being of the local community. The new money circulating in the economy can be used in a variety of forms. It can be used on public expenditure and can be spent on building infrastructure for the country. It can also take the form of greater employment opportunities, and increased production which will attempt to increase the GDP of the country. Production induced phenomenon will work when businesses will buy goods and services from other business and consumption induced phenomenon will work when the final consumers would buy goods and services. However, the promotion of ecotourism must be done with caution because it can also put an additional burden on the financial and economic resources of the country.

Any act that is aimed at hurting the employee directly or indirectly and hence lead to reduced work should be reported and appropriate steps taken against the employer. In our case Kara should have reported that to the appropriate discipline for it to stop. This study highlights that wWhere workplace bullying can be taken as just a norm or a light act that will have no deep effects on the employee, at extreme cases one can experience the following;- high blood pressure, heart attack, overwhelming anxiety and panic attack, constant loss of memory and concentration, tension and constant headaches, mood swings and loss of appetite. This can highly reduce your motivation at the workplace and it is at such times that one can decide to take a retaliatory step to end it all. This can be in different forms where one can decide to quit the job and work where you will be okay working. Other people may decide to handle it in a different way where they can report the employer for the indecent approaches and intimidation.  The first factor that leads to workplace bullying is job insecurity. Team Field claims that a weak manager who is afraid of the employees will always try to impact actions that intimidate the employees. This can be curbed by cre ating good cohesion in the workplace and reducing the tension. This will stop the efforts of suppression by the boss. Female employees are 70% more often bullied than their male experts. This is mainly because of their soft nature. They should address the situation early as it could even lead to sexual harassment as it has been witnessed in some situations.

A product can be anything that can be offered to a market to satisfy a want or need. Products that are marketed include physical goods, services, experiences, events, persons, places, properties, organizations, information and ideas.’ (Kotler et al, 2007: 316). Services also form an important part of products. ‘It is wrong to imply that services are just like products â€Å"except† for intangibility.’ (Shostack, 1977: 73). With the changing trends all across the globe, services have become a very important section which contributes towards a country’s GDP. How much services sector has grown can be seen from the fact that this sector contributes more than 75% in the GDPs of countries like The United States and The United Kingdom. Price is the monetary equivalent that we pay in return for services and products which we consume. Although the business is not too motivated towards making quick profits, with the entrepreneurs experience and energy, this business would like to expand in future years on a consistent pace marking a reputation in the market. 2.2.  Ã‚   Description of the product/service Product distribution rights are freely available in retail chain and wholesale market apart from franchise outlets. However, the distributors and franchisees are expected to have a permit license to sell toys and also must abide by the legal terms and conditions that are provided by the company.   Further wholesalers and retailers are not authorized to claim any legal rights about the toy apart from distribution and sale. The entire ownership and copyrights of toys rest with the   manufacturing company. Further apart from consumer market, the toy would also be available for preparatory model schools, kindergarten and upper kindergarten schools. This is permitted in order to bring awareness among schools that such educational toys are also being promoted in order to make teaching skills much easier. 2.3.  Ã‚   Background The motive behind this business is to start an independent unit which is both useful and that sells all through the year without any halt. Both entrepreneurs have excellent business skills, one with a degree in MBA and the other with M.A (Child psychology) Both are of the view that launching an educational toy would be a massive success as this product is presently not available in the market and with this innovative idea, entrepreneurs are also of the opinion that the business would also provide employment to those who are jobless. Appendix I : Details of proprietors. Purchase of on-going concern is also a good idea, as most of the manufacturing equipment, office systems, and manpower are readily available for takeover whereas minimum operating expenses and start-up expenses are the only major expenses.   Another opinion is also stated here that a new set up of business is also a good idea whereas extra efforts and care is required until business takes its shape for start-off and take-off. 2.4.  Ã‚   Assumptions There are absolutely no assumptions that do not materialise or work in a practical manner.   This proposed business being a mathematical and educational toy/game for kids; there are no misconeptions about the acceptance and success of currency toy/game in the toy market. 2.5.  Ã‚   Definitions Toy dollar currency : This means that U.S currency in wood or plastic form is designed only for learning or for playing for little children. This currency carries no commercial value or resale value. Wholesaler : Wholesaler is a licensed toy seller   who is authorised to distribute toy dollar currency game to retail stores, schools, educational institutions or any other place where pre-school training or learning is provided. Franchisees : Franchisees are those who enter into contract with the entrepreneurs that no other product franchise would be undertaken within the contract period and carry exclusive rights to market toy dollar currency at a global pace with the medium of Internet or through any other effective marketing tool under the disclosure of owners of business. 3.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   GENERAL analysis 3.1.  Ã‚   Business Mission The mission of business is to promote healthy, innovative and knowledgeable products for growing generation. In this global arena, it is required that kids have to be in a learning environment which would shape kids in a better way in development of personalities.   Globalisation has evolved several global businesses wherein every business produces a new product, new idea, new promotion and motive is ultimately to make quick profits whereas our mission is far distant to such speedy money sources. Business   must extend a product that is useful to consumers and in return consumers take care of companies to grow and prosper which is the give-n-take policy of this   business.   In fact businesses must grow along with consumers which gives a complete satisfaction both to consumers as well to entrepreneurs. The purpose of this product is to assist kids to learn about dollar currency counting in the initial stages of learning.   Especially toddlers taste every toy and find out what it is meant for. That is the origin of child psychology. Whether it is a candy or a toy, toddler identifies only by tasting it.   Toddlers prefer exclusive premise for breakfast, lunch and dinner and so also for play time. At times, if there is a disturbance to privacy or interest, toddlers yell in order to tell how big and important the meal and play time is. In such instance, a think over plan is here to provide knowledge to toddler about dollar currency beginning from cents. This toy comes in a 30L x 15B box with a 3 steel/plastic rods fixed in it. Coins beginning from 1 cent to 100 cents are fixed to enable toddler to learn counting of cents.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The second rod contains coins beginning from 1 dollar to 100 dollars. The third rod contains coins beginning from 1 million to 100 million.   The rods cannot be removed and neither the coins. The toddler can only push from one end to the other by counting cents, dollars and millions.   Three colors are chosen for three rods and also for coins for easy identification of coins denomination.   There is a provision for learning addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (BODMAS) whereas it is not a must for toddlers. The market served would be entire domestic market and also depending on the marketing methods, export of sales to other countries are   expected. In the initial period of launch of product, the owners are expecting a good feedback from wholesalers and franchisees.   The pricing of toy would be reasonable costing $5.00 and after when sales pick up in a span of one year or more, there is a probability to increase the selling price by another $1.00. Primarily the owners would like to tap success in toy market by launching this product and also with the motive to satisfy customers who are looking for such educational promoting product.   Owners would like to consult parents, buyers and other distributors for feedback and also consider opinions about the product from time to time. Goal of business would be to run a self-sufficient business apart from offering employment to others, as jobs have become necessary particularly in a country like U.S where people are working 16-18 hrs per day doing two or more part/full time jobs, the owners believe that ‘live and let others also live’.   Owners are also of the fact that, money making in business is important   whereas customer satisfaction is equally important.  Ã‚   Many businesses in the past have proved this fact that ethics in business are very important in order to grow consistently and to stay in business market. Individuals who are educated and mastered the skills for doing excellent business can very well float a business independently instead of working elsewhere and as a matter of fact, there are many housewives and couples who have begun businesses in kitchen which have later grown to be multinationals which reiterates that skill, dedication and customer satisfaction are three variables that have to be looked into to enter business field. 3.2.  Ã‚   Business Structure and Management The proposed business would be a private limited company with two important entrepreneurs as the driving force behind the business plan.  Ã‚   The management considers the advice of business consultants, accountants and legal experts in order to incorporate a private limited company, establish manufacturing unit, and commence business with administrative staff viz., accountant, marketing manager, reception desk and skilled labor . While accountant would be taking care of complete financial system of company, marketing manager would be completely responsible for marketing the product and inform management on daily basis about the feedback and response from the market. Reception would be responding to enquiries for distributors, wholesalers, retailers and other educational institutions and provide complete information to management on every day basis. Workforce would be approximately less or equal to 10   individuals in order to manufacture plastic coins and rods, make carton boxes, arrange and pack and load into transport or deliver the product to the destination.  Ã‚   There should also be provision for trucks, drivers and   helping boys to load cartons from one place to another. Further company’s web site neatly designed providing a complete set of information about product, facility for online purchase, email, enquiry form should be made available in order to tap online sales for the product. 3.3.  Ã‚   Market Environment Management is confident that the product would be very well accepted in the market and would increase sales in the first month of its launch. The reason for this assessment is due to the fact that there is no other isolated currency toy in the market at present whereas other games include business as a concept for the age group of above 8yrs which are called as ‘monopoly’ . This game encourages children to count paper currency, buy hotels, resorts, which explain children that business and personal income can be earned in various forms and methods by doing buying and selling with the medium of currency. Similarly, a toddler hardly when one year old, when begins to learn alphabets and digits, a concept of currency counting helps child to gain knowledge about money and how it is counted and what are its forms.   This game faces absolutely no competition as it is the first ever toy that is being launched in market for this age group of one year and above especially when it is coming in educational promotion. This does not mean that educational toys are not available in the market. There are many for kindergarten for learning alphabets, maths, science and many other I.Q games and toys.   This particular model of toy is not available in the market and with this stance, when a discussion was held, many toy market experts were of the opinion that toy price being moderately low, there is absolutely no question as to why the product cannot tap success and above all, all group of consumers would evince interest in buying this product as it was revealed in a survey. 3.4.  Ã‚   Plant Equipment Plant and equipment required for starting this venture is no more than $50,000 which includes operating expenses. Machinery for manufacture of plastic coins, embossing of currency in various denominations, colouring, printing and steel rods manufacturing machinery and machinery for making 3015 plastic boxes.   This is the major equipment that is required in order to manufacture toy currency. 3.5.  Ã‚   Skills Assessment There is a consultant who is experienced and who is an expert in toy market especially in designing currency, who is hired by management until the commencement of business.   The guidance of expert is proving to be the most precious for the management in order to train the labor to perform and produce the desired quality of toy. One of the owners is an MBA graduate who completely acquainted with business skills to motivate labor, and maintain good HR practices with workers and employees. Apart from this capital budget, finance budget and forecast of sales is also an expertise field of this MBA graduate entrepreneur. The other owner who is M.A in psychology understands and has the ability to promote this educational toy to schools and educational institutions for bringing awareness about toy currency and its important in development of child psychology.   The importance of money can never be taken for granted and it is important for parents and society to train children as how to handle money matters and how a currency can be useful in day-to-day life. In a way, this can be described as teaching of money management for children. 3.6 Risk Analysis At present, owners do not foresee any risks in commencement of business.   The SWOT analysis reveals that a great strength and energy exists with owners with the fact that an innovative product is being launched with a motive to serve and educate customers. This concludes another fact that motives matter most in business and good businesses thrive on honest motives. Apart from this, MBA graduate is fully conversant with business laws, legal and corporate laws. M.A child psychology helps even better to launch more number of good toys in the market which is also another strength of the making this business plan a success. There are no possible weaknesses in the business with the fact that both the entrepreneurs have a mixed strength and good motives. Unless there is a massive unforeseen loss or event that hampers the production of business, there is no scope for any crop up of weaknesses. Opportunities are many in toy market. In fact toy market is never saturated unlike other industries. There is always something new and also there is no end for demand and supply. Threats in toy market are although at a moderate percentage, the proposed toy currency is free from any hazards as the children cannot dislocate coins and have to sit at one place and play as long as the interest goes on. Record the SWOT details in Appendix:II 4.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   operational plan 4.1.  Ã‚   Key Business Objectives Key business objectives in â€Å"SMART† system are as follows: S – Specific : To promote toy currency as a good product in toy market. The objective of the business is to promote educational products to children under the age of 5. Certainly the motive is not behind making quick money and rather serving customers useful products   and definitely making a new pattern of design and mark in business. Therefore, there is a professional code in starting this business which is why the objectives of business are very specific. M – Measurable : The performance of business is forecasted to do extremely well with toy currency entry into the market. Initial sales volume is expected to sell approximately 10000 toys in the first 5 months of launch and thereafter there is a proposal to increase 1000 nos by every month.   As this is only an assumption whereas when the product truly available in market, the sales are expected to rise above assumptions. In a span of three years, i.e. by 2010, the business is expected to be really doing well with a proportionate share of sale of product in the toy market. A – Achievable : The targets set before Achievable targets within the limitations of business. Depending on the orders that would be received from various distributors, the production would be made. Although, the start-up appears to be at a low pace, there is a guarantee that future targets would be quite achievable depending on the sales and order volumes recorded each year. R – Results oriented : This business is quite practical and extends knowledge and comfort to customers. There would be no difficulties or any problems that can occur with the usage of product. The product is absolutely result-oriented and there is a premonition that by the end of first month of production, there may be a requirement to double the production in order to meet the demand of product. T – From the very first day business , management is active working operations, collecting feedback, finding new customers, distributors, picking up of orders and paying more attention that quality of goods is perfect. Initially at the end of every month, there would be a trial balance, balance sheet for taking note of sales and profits. Once the financial statements are indicating good sales track and profits, quarterly PL and thereafter half-yearly and yearly.   For any business to mark success, time is the essence whereas for this project,   there are absolute guarantees for success with the fact that this is an innovative product being manufactured in the interest of future generation of children. Objective 1  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Objective Time frame  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Conduct a professional standard  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Run an efficient business 1-5 yrs  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Practice business ethics 4.1.1.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Implementation Strategy In this stage of implementation, firstly the incorporation certificate is to be obtained that a private limited company is being incorporated with the name â€Å"Currency Point Pvt Ltd† The two directors would be Bill Joe and Charles who would be busy in commencement of business operations. A suitable location is to be selected for installing machinery to begin production. The premises would include both production and administrative office. Staff and workers have to attend regularly until orders are picked up. Advertisement through brochures, television, classified ads and websites would enable fast pick up of sales. Further designing of website and launching for marketing is also essential.   Preparation of monthly sales report, marketing report, Income and expenditure statement and targets for future months have to be recorded on a monthly basis.   Suitable guidance, training and advice must be provided to workers and employees in both administration and in production. It is also good to retain employees with the fact that frequent new appointments require excessive time in recruitment, training and guidance.   Appendix:IV Development Brief description rationale Cost 2008  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   First year of commencement of business. The objective is to market product and record sales as much as possible 10000 2009  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Market and sell the product and aim to record a higher sales volume. 20000 2010  ·Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Increase business volume by exporting and also open RD centre for working on new educational toys for children. 30000 4.2   Marketing 4.2.1Market Research According to the market research conducted, toy currency is not available in the market which is designed especially for toddlers between the age group of 1 and 1 ½ years. 4.2.2  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Positioning in the Market There is zero competition from competitors as there are no companies which are manufacturing this product and in fact the management owns the complete credibility of the product from the groundwork till the launch of product into the market. 4.2.3  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Pricing Strategy Pricing of the product is fixed at an affordable rate keeping in the view of both poor and middle class families.   Toy currency is fixed at $5.00 as MRP price in the market. 4.2.4  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Target Market The market focus would be all through the United States and Europe and thereafter marketing would be shifted to Asia, Africa and other parts of the world.   Here at this, it is important to take note that if orders being booked for Europe, company management would consider the opinion of customers whether the toy currency should be indicated as ‘Euro’ for European buyers and so also for other parts of the world. It is true that toy is being manufactured in dollar currency, wheras if other global customers prefer regional currencies, a provision is included to manufacture according to the currency required.   However, this is only a provision and not mandatory to meet as an obligation in order increase order supplies. Toy currency is aimed at entertaining toddlers whereas if it is entertaining upper age group, this business appreciates the interest.   There are no limitations or no rules for customers to buy this product. It is displayed in retail stores for $5.00 and any number of volumes can be purchased with proper billing system. 4.2.5  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Distribution Licenced distributors for toys are permitted to distribute toy currency after signing a contract with the company. Depending on the orders, each distributor generates, fixed incentive would be paid.   E.g. 500 orders per month would give an incentive of 0.25 cents x 500 = $125.00.   This rate of incentive is also applicable for franchisees.   Further franchisees are not permitted to promote any other product other than toy currency. 4.2.6  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Promotional Strategy Visiting Montessori schools,   collecting data about distributors, franchisees, advertisement are some of promotional strategies. These efforts are made in order to market toy currency in various places.   The company would like to stay focused with this product at least for a period of 3 years until business is stabilised. Further company promises excellent customers service, packing and forwarding , apart from good methods of publicity through door-to-door campaign, brochures and schools. 4.2.7  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Sales Targets The first year of selling is targeted to be at least 10,000 nos. The second year of selling is targeted to be 50,000 nos and the third year of selling is targeted to be 100000 and above. One of the reason to target an increase by 100 fold is the pricing of toy currency is at an affordable rate and it can purchased by every parent. 4.3. Financial Plan. 4.3.1  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Start-up Capital Description Budget-Amt Incorporation expenses $   1,000 Premises for Rent $   4,000 Machinery $ 60,000 Installation $  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   500 Electricity and fixtures, fittings $  Ã‚   1,000 Raw materials $ 10,000 Miscellaneous $  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   500 Total $   77,000 Loan financing $ 100,000 Here there is a margin of $ 23000 as a safe mode of operation in order to meet other expenses if any occur at the time of production. 4.3.3 Assessment of Financial Viability of Proposed Business Owners are not investing any amount and financing of $100000 is sought from SBA or from other FIs and the repayment would be yearly $ 5000   which would take 20 months to refund entire loan amount. The cost of manufacturing of each toy currency box at production level would be $4.00 and with a profit of $1.00 the product would be marketed in consumer market.   This margin of profit if it is maintained, depending on the sales, the company can record huge volume of business even in the first year of business. For e.g. $ 5.00 x 10,000 = 50,000 (profit   = S.P – C.P, $ 50,000 $ 40,000 = $ 10,000)   If it is assumed that in the first 6 months on an average there is a sale of 10,000 nos the profit is $ 10,000 and this is after payment of salaries and expenses, which is reasonably good. Breakeven = Operating expenses / Gross profit margin Operating expenses Gross profit margin Breakeven 2008 $ 15,000   $   20,000 0.75 2009 $ 10,000 $ 120,000 0.83 2010 $ 12,000 $   220,000 0.054 4.3.4  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Cash Flow/Cash Position   Cash flow on monthly basis is expected to be moderately good. It can be further calculated as on an average if there is a sale of 200 nos per day 15 x $ 5.00 = $ 750 and monthly cash flow would be $ 750 x 26 (exclude Sundays) $ 19,500. If this is carried forward on for 12 months $ 19,500 x 12   = $ 234,000.   The proposed annual cash flow at the end of three years would be $ 234000 x 3 = $ 702,000. Out of the above, it is required to exclude salaries, tax payments and raw material expenses or any other expenses such as depreciation to machinery, rent and payment of electricity bills. 4.3.5  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Profit and Loss Depending on the sales, a forecast of profit is made approximately to $ 10,000 in the first year as $ 10,000   and for three years the profit would be $ 30,000. 4.3.6  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Balance Sheet The equity share capital which is invested to an extent of $ 100,000 is used in fixed assets and in commencement of business. 4.3.7 Ratio Calculations Profitability =   Earnings after Taxes / Sales I year : 12000/100,000 = 0.12 II year : 28000/200,000 = 0.14 III year: 192000/300,000 = 0.64 Return on Assets = Earnings after Assets / Total Assets APPENDIX I – CURRICULUM VITAE OF DIRECTORS Name : Bill Joe Age   Ã‚  Ã‚  : 26 yrs Education : M.B.A from Kelloggs school of business. Kate Chopins The Awakening Essay -- Kate Chopin Awakening Essays Pape

Kate Chopin's The Awakening In Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening, written approximately one hundred years ago, the protagonist Edna Pontellier's fate is resolved when she 'deliberately swims out to her death in the gulf'(Public Opinion, np). Her own suicide is indeed considered as a small, almost nonexistent victory by many, nevertheless there are those who consider her death anything but insignificant. Taking into consideration that 'her inability to articulate her feelings and analyze her situation [unattainable happiness] results in her act of suicide...'(Muirhead, np) portrays Edna as being incapable of achieving a release from her restricted womanhood as imposed by society. Others state that the final scene of the novel entirely symbolizes and realizes Edna's victory on a 'society that sees their [women's] primary value in their biological functions as wives and mothers?(Kate Chopin, np). In short, The Awakening is the tragic story of a woman who in a summer of her twenty-eighth year, found herself and struggled to do what she wanted to do; be happy. Although ?from wanting to, she did, with disastrous consequences?(Recent Novels 96). For those who wanted it to be a truly, and ironically, life achieving instead of life ending end, it was. But those who disagreed with Chopin?s choice ending found themselves losing some sleep over another magnificent author gone wrong (96). Various readers and reviewers alike found the ending to be sold short and unsatisfactory since it did not deliver the promise of a rewarding happy life to the protagonist who so valiantly endured her obstacles throughout the novel. Had she lived by Prof. William James? advice to do one thing a day one does not want to do [in Creole Society, two would perhaps be better], flirted less and looked after her children more, or even assisted at more accouchements- her chef d?auvre in self denial- we need not have been put to the unpleasantness of reading about her and the temptations she trumped up for herself. (96) Irony plays an inexplicable and majestic part in the conclusion of The Awakening. One can say with confidence that in a story a protagonist, or heroin in this case, is expected to fulfill a happily ever after ending not only from a repetitious guarantee but from the incisive determination by such character, whom through hardships, earned it. The Health Care Puzzle :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers

The Health Care Puzzle Health care in the United States has improved immensely during the past century. Improved technology has finally allowed us to eliminate deadly disease from our society. Unfortunately, the technology is expensive and has put monetary burdens upon the care receivers. No longer can a middle class American afford the astronomical fees for lifesaving operations in the hospital. Because of this, health insurance, like car insurance, flood insurance or fire insurance, has been established to assure its participant that he or she is able to be provided with the best care possible. Many horrible stories by normal people have shown that it hasn't happened. Deserved health care has not been provided, and many "insured participants" have suffered because of this. The problems of health care in the United States include: questioning of cost reduction techniques, allegations of death and injury, competition between hospitals themselves, and legal loopholes in the system. It's no wonder that medic al care systems are under such scrutiny. One system in particular that has violated the system is the HMO, or Health Maintenance Organizations, a public provider which forces their patient to choose from an assortment of their physicians. Since their establishment, HMOs have gradually decreased the quality of patient health care significantly, especially in hospitals. Debates over the health care provided by HMOs have arisen in many cases. For an alarming majority, organizations like the HMO are the only affordable option for providing health care. Since most people could never afford such costs as expensive surgeries, they have turned to HMOs to provide them with care, paid via a monthly premium. A variety of services can be offered to patients in one familiar place. In addition, the doctors are good because they are screened before acceptance by other qualifying physicians. Procedures are also given more objectively, because of no extra fee incentives for the physicians in prepaid programs, where the goal is to lower costs. Also, costs are about the same for every visit, and claim forms are kept at a minimum. Another advantage of companies like HMO is that there is a familiarity between the physicians of the HMO group. Specialists of all kinds can relate to each other because they are in a cooperative working environment. In contrast, disadvanta ges exist with these health providers. Since patients depend on them for care, they must trust the HMO also. This means that their health can be damaged because of a doctor's faulty decision making, instead of the patient's.

Racial Preference Essay

In this article, Whites Swim in Racial Preference, Tim Wise discusses the racial inequality in our society. As a whole, we want to believe that our culture is fair and just in racial terms. We would like to believe racial preference is a thing of the past, however, it is very much current. Discrimination has existed for decades but I believe that African-Americans got the bitter end of the stick. In the 1960’s, black people got treated like they weren’t even human beings. â€Å"A full time black male worker in 2003 makes less in real dollar terms than similar white men were earning in 1967.† (Wise, 2003) Obviously, the racial preference has not faded so much as society would like to believe. African-Americans struggled when it came to trying to take care of their family and becoming a citizen. The inequality seemed as if it was becoming norm in the 60’s. Blacks weren’t even given the chance to prove themselves, simply because their complexion was a little darker than whites. As stated in the article, whites have much more of an advantage when it comes to today’s culture. Whites are given more opportunities in life, which in return leads them to be more successful. Tim Wise used the example of University of Michigan providing 20 additional points to students with low-income families regardless of race. Seems fair, right? It seems fair until you total it all up and in the end whites are the ones with more points. It isn’t even given a second thought because whites were raised to believe that their accomplishments are because of their actions and not because they grew up in a system that was set up for them to achieve in. Yes, Affirmative Action happened, but in the end it still benefitted whites more than any other race. Races such as Arabs and Muslims get looked down upon ever since 9/11 and that lessens their success in society. Blacks get perceived as dangerous and reckless. Whites still have the upper leg in many things in society such as politics and jobs.

Golf and Gatorade

Kyle Qualizza English 104 2/8/10 Gatorade One of the most dominating keys in today’s business world can easily be seen through the Gatorade Company. Their products have become extremely popular to the world, keeping their competition in the dust. Ordinary businesses struggle to retain their name on the board with this eminent company in the way, and for obvious reasons: excellent advertisement. Forty-five years have passed since the creation of this ultimate athletic drink, and Gatorade still continues to flourish. The product itself has a legendary story behind it. Many say that the University of Florida first noticed that all of their athletes could not perform to their highest skill level due to dehydration. Both professors and coaches decided to come together and find a solution to this problem. After multiple trial and error labs were performed, they finally broke through with an unbelievable item. They found something that would do more than just replenish fluids. It supplied the body with a plentiful amount of electrolytes, a task that water cannot complete (Gatorade History). With electrolytes, this beverage provided the Florida Gator football players with both energy and awareness to perform at their peak. This break-through proves to be one of the largest in sports technology today. Now that they came up with a product, the next most important topic to discuss was advertisement. They needed to know exactly how to market this product. When Gatorade first came out, the advertisements displayed to its viewers how the efficiency level rises when you use their particular item for consumption. One of the keys to effectively advertising can be seen through repetition. Gatorade utilizes this tool through the three â€Å"R’s†: rehydrate, replenish, and refuel that marks each bottle (Gatorade). Now that Gatorade’s popularity began to rise, they wanted to expand their product across the world. The company started casting commercials with professional athletes who drank their product. This allowed the fans to build a connection with their favorite professional players. This approach proved to be extremely successful. People believe that if they drink Gatorade, that they are more like this socially accepted superstar. Not to mention, people gain a personal type of self-confidence that they too will dominant a sport if they drink like the professionals. Recent commercials involving Tiger Woods, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, and Michael Phelps reinforced this style of advertisement. However, by advertising certain people, expectations have to be met or sales will decrease. The best example for this circumstance happened about a month ago. Tiger Woods, golf legend, had his own style of Gatorade made specifically for him. Woods always took on this picture-perfect image as the best golfer and great role model, always supported by his loving wife and family. Gatorade saw this as an opportunity to make a great deal of money by advertising his name and face on their product. At first, the athletic drink was a huge hit. He improved his golf swing and began winning every tournament he entered, leaving sales at an all time high. Gatorade continued to sell this beverage because of his high performance, until he slipped up. Everything was based on his performance on the golf course until he finally slipped up. What people didn’t see was his at-home life. Woods raced out of his house in his SUV and crashed into a tree. At first, many believed he fell asleep behind the wheel. However, after digging deeper, the police discovered Woods actually had been running from his wife, Elin, in order to be with other women. Tiger cheated on his wife with nine other women. This disturbing news came to the public, leaving them shocked and full of questions. His perfect image crumbled. Gatorade no longer wanted to use Tiger in their advertisement because of his tainted image. The Tiger Woods series took on an extreme blow. Not only did the sales drop astronomically, but the company itself faced the condescending public’s eye because they once supported him. The Gatorade Company had no other option but to discontinue the Tiger Woods series. (Original bottle) Also, another factor to consider is the design of the bottle. In 1985, the beverage’s marketing looked extremely bland. There was no vibrancy to the product which did not catch the buyer’s eye. The Gatorade Company took notice. As the product continued to become more advanced, so did the advertising. Within the forty -five years, Gatorade has changed their image significantly. Their newest of bottles being decorated with extremely bright, bold colors and features. The label of the product now â€Å"pops† to the buyers. Furthermore, there are inspirational sayings along the side of the drink. In addition, the color of the actual fluid is different with every type of flavor. All together, the advertising makes for a very balanced and animated item. In today’s society everything is now viewed on health and body image. Gatorade has taken their product to the next level by lowering the calorie per bottle and allowing anyone on any diet to consume their beverage. It is the revolutionized way of the food market. All in all, the advertising action of Gatorade has played a huge role in their production. Without the color balance or vibrancy of the label the product wouldn’t be noticed. And, without the inspirational commercials, the drink wouldn’t be as seen as such a highly marked item. However, since the Gatorade Company has taken time to fully understand this side of marketing, their results are booming. Work Cited Decision News Media SAS, â€Å"Gatorade to expand advertising†. Now people more and more early to have cancer, Many things can let us more easy to increase the risk of cancer, there are including smoke, certain infections, radiation, lack of physical activity, obesity, and environmental pollutants. These can directly damage genes or combine with existing genetic faults within cells to cause the disease. Chemotherapy is one of the methods for the treatment of cancer. That uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. It is also called â€Å"chemo. † Today, there are many different kinds of chemotherapy. So the way patient feel during treatment may be very different from someone else. Why I chosen this treatment, because Chemotherapy is a common treatment that I usu ally heard in news or someone talk about it, so I also interested in this treatment.Chemotherapy can be used to: Destroy cancer cells,Stop cancer cells to spread ,Slow the growth of cancer cells. The Zoot-Suit Riots Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Zoot-Suit Riots - Essay Example No one was killed, no one sustained massive injuries, property damage was slight, and no major or minor judicial decisions stemmed from the riots. There was no pattern to arrests; convictions were few and highly discretionary. There were no political manifestos or heroes originating from the riots (Mazon 1). But it did cause damage to those involved. By the beginning of 1943, America was deeply engaged with the Second World War. In Los Angeles, the city had already been emptied of its residents of Japanese ancestry. Young Latinos, unlike their elders, were not content to stay within their barrios, but were spilling into downtown dance halls, movie houses, pool halls and clubs. As young men are prone to do, many young Latino males distinguished themselves with distinctive hairdos and apparel. They wore drapes which resembled the zoot suits worn in Harlem. It was designed to be comfortable to dance in, and some believed that it was sometimes used as a signal that the wearer belonged to a club or gang. Most Anglos called the outfit a zoot suit and assumed that only hoodlums wore them. Long before the riots, Mexicans and Mexican Americans were the victims, and often the authors of many other descriptive names. Now, due to the drapes, the term 'Zoot Suiters' was attributed to this riot. However, the Mexican American teenagers called t hemselves pachucos.

Argument - Essay Example In rural school districts, however, 20 percent of students were considered obese. More alarmingly, researchers found that during the years of the survey, between 1999 and 2001, the number of obese students in rural school districts rose about 5 percent, more than twice the rate of their urban counterparts.† The research handled within this quote has been explained later within this paper. (Paxson, Christina) This paper thus helps to provide an insight into the rapidly growing rate of obesity that children suffer in schools and helps to provide solutions regarding how to counter this alarming issue. Most children all around the world spend their maximum time in school and therefore it is pertinent for the schools administration and authorities to understand the problem of obesity and address the issues as fast as possible in order to risk the complexity which comes along with obesity in old age. Around 9 million school children in the age group of above six years to fifteen years have been distinguished to be obese in USA as given in many statistical reports. Obesity among school children may be attributed to poor quality of life in school, as the children do not give enough attention to a healthy life. So what is causing such alarming rate of obesity among school students in USA? More and more children are now prone to obesity and the problem never ceases to go down with time, with parents getting tensed and worried for their children and looking for solution which could cater to the problem in the most effective and efficient manner. To highlight the solution to the problem, one of the main acts which needs to be initiated by schools is to foster an exercise module which shall incorporate physical fitness among the students of the school inside the school premises at regular intervals and throughout the week so that the students do not fall prone to ill health during their academic calendar. One of the
